Unprecedented Feat in the Northern Cape

Project Scope:

Powering Progress : Statec’s ambitious project spans three expansive solar plants covering 879 hectares in the sun-rich Northern Cape province. With a combined solar capacity of 540 MW, this initiative stands as an unprecedented feat in the global solar landscape.

Labor-Intensive Installation:

Over 2,600 dedicated workers invested nearly 18 months in the installation process, deploying close to a million photovoltaic modules across the vast project area.

Infrastructure Scale:

The project’s magnitude is reflected in its infrastructure scale, boasting an impressive 9,000 kilometers of cabling – equivalent to the distance between South Africa and Norway. The 456 battery units, each the size of a shipping container and weighing approximately 3,000 kilograms, underscore the grandeur of this venture.

Pioneering Sustainable Solutions

Pioneering Hybrid Facility:

Statec’s initiative marks a global milestone as one of the world’s first and largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities. It showcases South Africa’s commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions, setting an example for the rest of the world.

Power Purchase Agreement:

In a significant move, Statec has entered a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom. This commitment plays a crucial role in mitigating the ongoing loadshedding crisis that has plagued the nation.

Future Plans:

Looking ahead, South Africa aims to boost its solar power capacity to over 8 GW by 2030. Statec, already operational with over 448 MW of solar power in the country, has been selected as the preferred bidder for the Mogobe (Ferrum) battery energy storage project. This addition will contribute an extra 103 MW of capacity and 412 MWh of storage, solidifying South Africa’s commitment to an energy-resilient future.
