In a significant move towards sustainable energy practices, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) marked a momentous occasion as its Managing Director, Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, laid the foundation stone for a 499 KWP rooftop solar plant. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on the fourth floor of the NTR Administrative Block, situated within the premises of the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada.

APSRTC Takes Strides Towards Sustainable Energy with 499 KWP Rooftop Solar Plant

Underlining the commitment to renewable energy, APSRTC has entered into a 25-year tripartite agreement with Enerture Technologies Private Limited, headquartered in New Delhi, and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (NREDCAP). This collaboration is set to bring to fruition the installation of the rooftop solar plant system at PNBS, boasting an impressive 499 KWP capacity, and the Central Hospital at Vidyadharapuram in Vijayawada, with a capacity of 64 KWP.

The project, with an estimated cost of around 2.50 crore, is a testament to the public-private partnership as Enerture Technologies Private Limited shoulders the financial responsibility. According to the terms of the agreement, the project is expected to be completed by March 31, marking a significant milestone in APSRTC’s journey towards sustainability.

This initiative is not an isolated effort, as APSRTC has identified an additional 22 bus stations and other RTC institutions for the installation of rooftop solar systems under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. The move aligns with the Green Initiative of the Government of India and demonstrates APSRTC’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

In 2019, APSRTC had already made strides in green energy adoption by installing four rooftop solar plants, each with a capacity of 100 KWP, at Madanapalle, Kakinada, Nandyala, and Chittoor bus stations. These projects, implemented under the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) model, incurred a total expenditure of 40 lakhs for each plant. The anticipated savings on power bills from each of these rooftop solar plants are substantial, amounting to 92,000 per month and 44.16 lakhs per annum across all four projects.

The Managing Director of APSRTC, Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, highlighted that with the addition of the new plants at PNBS and the Central Hospital, the corporation anticipates monthly savings of 2.25 lakhs and an annual savings of 27 lakhs. He commended the collaborative efforts of the APSRTC team and Enerture Technologies Private Limited for their proactive stance in initiating this eco-friendly project.

As the world increasingly acknowledges the importance of renewable energy, APSRTC’s forward-thinking approach not only contributes to the global efforts in combating climate change but also sets a commendable example for sustainable practices within the public transport sector. The strides made by APSRTC underscore the potential of public-private partnerships in driving environmental initiatives and fostering a greener, more sustainable future for all.
